Tucson Selects Holophane for Downtown Revitalization

Acuity Brands took part recently in a project to relight part of the downtown Tucson, Arizona, area using its Bern® Series of the Holophane® line of GlasWerks II® luminaires, which use energy-efficient induction technology. The project is part of a master plan by Tucson to reinvigorate its downtown and bring more local citizens and tourists to the area.

Home to nearly a million residents, Tucson blends the majesty of the surrounding mountainsides with the excitement of a flourishing city. The revitalization project focused primarily on Scott Avenue, with neighborhood residents, designers, business owners, engineers, utilities and organizations coming together to create an environment that encourages pedestrian traffic. Enhancements such as a solar-illuminated turquoise trail, a water fountain for dogs, shade trees and gryphon tracks in the sidewalk are designed to stimulate interest along a street that was once considered a minor artery.

“Scott Avenue flows into Broadway, a main thoroughfare through Tucson,” said Ernie Encinas, transportation superintendent for the city of Tucson. “The goal was not only to revitalize Scott Avenue, but to show residents what a downtown stretch of road could look like when the city has the budget to make the upgrades needed.”
