As part of its ongoing initiative to educate the market about the current viability and future potential of intelligent LED lighting and controls solutions, Acuity Brands presented two sessions at the LEDs 2010 Conference in October in San Diego. The company also featured some of its newest LED lighting and controls technologies at the conference.
Dave Ranieri, vice president and general manager of Lithonia Lighting Commercial Indoor Products, presented, “Harnessing the Collective Power of Solid State Lighting and Controls Systems.” Ranieri’s presentation explored how early applications of discrete LED components have evolved to performance-optimized solutions for general ambient lighting applications. Further enabled by advanced digital control technologies such as those from Acuity Brands, these new lighting solutions are more intelligent and adaptive to surrounding environmental conditions.
Dr. Mike Lu, director of OLED Technology for Acuity Brands, discussed organic solid state lighting at the conference. Renowned for his expertise in OLED research and development, Dr. Lu recently presented the coming challenges of OLEDs at the Future of Lighting & Backlighting conference in Seattle.

Utility Tear Drop LED
A pilot outdoor LED lighting and revitalization project in Rock Falls, Illinois, is using the Holophane® brand of luminaires and its innovative SiteLink® pole system. The City also will be using photocontrols from Acuity Brands’ DTL® controls, which save energy and reduce utility replacement costs.
Focusing initially on the City Hall parking lot, Rock Falls’ objective eventually is to revitalize the entire downtown area. The LED lighting will increase energy efficiency, improve overall quality oflight and reduce overall maintenance costs.
The City selected the Holophane Esplanade® 150-watt Utility Tear Drop LED luminaires mounted on SiteLink SL5 poles and North Yorkshire style decorative pole bases to satisfy its lighting and aesthetics criteria.
Rock Falls, located in Whiteside County, Illinois, was founded in 1867.

Holophane® brand outdoor roadway lighting is being installed for a large highway connecting Florida’s Interstate 4 in Tampa Bay to the Lee Roy Selmon Crosstown Expressway. The interchange is expected to provide more convenient, efficient freeway-to-freeway access to downtown Tampa and the Port of Tampa.
Among the goals for this new roadway: maintain a high level of aesthetic appeal, including enhancements complementing the architectural features of the 7th Avenue overpass in the Ybor City historic district. Helping to create a clean aesthetic appearance for the project is a contemporary styled lighting fixture, the Mongoose®, part of the Acuity Brands Holophane line. The Mongoose fixture provides highly efficient roadway illumination and was selected for its contemporary styling, high performance and easy maintenance.
The project is scheduled to be completed in the middle of 2012. The project completes an important regional link in the Tampa Interstate System and provides an alternative route for commuters traveling south and downtown.

A significant outdoor LED lighting project under way at Florida A&M University (“FAMU”) integrates Holophane® luminaires and ROAM® wireless controls from Acuity Brands. The goal: bring energy savings, sustainability and high-quality, uniform outdoor lighting to the Florida A&M University campus.
The University started electrical service upgrades in July of this year across the entire campus, which comprises 156 buildings spread over 422 acres in Tallahassee, Florida. The project includes an upgrade to campus amenity lighting with the installation of more than 750 new Holophane GranVille® luminaires and Holophane Oslow style decorative posts.
Many of the newly installed GranVille luminaires utilize highly efficient light-emitting diodes (LED) as their source technology. The upgrade will include the use of the ROAM control system, wirelessly interconnecting the entire outdoor lighting system on campus.

The free app, which can be downloaded from the iTunes® online store, offers on-the-go access to all of Mark’s product information.

It provides lighting designers, architects and other lighting specifiers instant access to Mark’s product selection, specifications, technical drawings, photographs and photometric data.
The application was designed to give its customers and sales force access to an enhanced version of the entire Mark Architectural Lighting catalog whenever and wherever they require it, said Chris McQuillan, vice president, Mark Architectural Lighting. The app has an e-mail feature that allows users to send specification data directly to their e-mail account and easily share it with others.

Acuity Brands has joined the effort to renovate New York City’s Jacob Javits Convention Center using its Holophane® brand of highbay luminaires. It’s part of a three-year renovation project to, among other things, re-light the main convention center space and create the largest “green” roof in the northeastern United States. The project started this summer and will phase through 2013.
The main thrust of the lighting portion of the renovation consists of replacing the existing highbay luminaires with solution-driven Holophane Prismpack® High Bay luminaires. The Javits Center’s goals include enhanced quality of illumination, energy savings, reduction in overall maintenance costs, and improved aesthetics. A unique component of the lighting used for this project is a partially perforated cover on the Prismpack luminaire to provide a very controlled amount of uplight and a differentiated aesthetic appearance.
