Acuity Brands Introduces Two New Products that Display Unique Characteristics of OLED Lighting Technology

May 2, 2012

Canvis and Trilia debut at LIGHTFAIR 2012 in Acuity Brands booth #4108.

At LIGHTFAIR® International 2012 Tradeshow and Conference, Acuity Brands, Inc. is showcasing two new OLED luminaire designs, Canvis™ and Trilia™, which will be offered by Winona Lighting. Both of the new lighting series explore the advanced design and performance capabilities of OLED technology, featuring unique configurations and applications designed to create mood and movement in a space.

The Canvis collection is a series of OLED luminaires featuring luminous surfaces, expressed through multiple shapes. Its angles, curves and movement convey mood while providing serene, volumetric light, offering a wide array of lighting design possibilities. The family includes the Twist, Drape, Screen and Pose and the design enables new dimensions in luminaire design and application.

The Canvis Twist luminaire can dynamically change shape by interacting with building occupants through gestural control. The Twist takes a traditional static visual environment and allows it to become nuanced, dimensional and customizable.

The Trilia luminaires are a collection of modular units that allow designers to shape single luminaires into unique, organic networks to deliver comfortable and uniform distribution of light. Trilia mounts at less than three-and-one-half inches below the ceiling and is suitable for many spatial heights and geometries. As a system, the luminaire can be applied in a multitude of ways to provide accent or functional lighting that breaks away from rectangular grid layouts, affording greater design freedom in interior spaces.

Merging innovative design and control with high quality illumination and energy efficiency, Canvis and Trilia utilize efficient and high-performing OLED panels with efficacies of 60 lumens per Watt. The new OLED luminaires are designed for indoor, ambient applications in both commercial and residential spaces, including healthcare, education, retail, office, hotels, restaurants, public spaces and the home.

“Canvis and Trilia realize the promise of solid-state lighting, where designers can transform the lighted environment, increase energy efficiency, and allow us to savor what light can do,” said Peter Ngai, Acuity Brands Lighting Vice President, Research and Development. “Profound understanding of the user’s experience is an essential underpinning of true design innovation, with technology as an enabler. Our unwavering focus on light’s unique interaction with people drives us to create the best lighting solutions for our customers.”

The Canvis and Trilia OLED luminaires will be on display at the Acuity Brands booth #4108 at LIGHTFAIR® International 2012 Tradeshow and Conference held at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas May 9-11, 2012.

Canvis and Trilia complement Acuity Brands’ commercially available Revel™ and Kindred™ OLED luminaires, now offered through its Winona Lighting unit, a leader in custom luminaire design and manufacturing. Product specifications, ordering information and pricing for the Canvis and Trilia families are available upon request.

All Winona Lighting products, including its OLED portfolio, are available through Acuity Brands global sales representatives and authorized distributors.

Winona Lighting Launches Expanded OLED Portfolio at Light+Building 2012

April 2, 2012

Acuity Brands, Inc. is pleased to announce the expansion of the Revel™ and Kindred™ luminaire families from Winona® Lighting. The expanded lines include new size and mounting options, and will be showcased at Light+Building 2012, April 15 – 20 in LG Chem’s booth (hall 4.2, booth G25).

Consistent with the Light+Building 2012 theme of “energy efficiency,” Revel and Kindred luminaires utilize efficient and high performing OLED panels provided by LG Chem, with efficacies of 60 lumens per watt. Both luminaire families provide performance-based lighting solutions designed for indoor ambient and decorative applications.

“The addition of the Revel and Kindred OLED luminaires allows the designer to customize and create unique fixtures that are eco-friendly and energy efficient,” said Peter Ngai, Acuity Brands Lighting Vice President, Research and Development. “The best innovations link technology and design with a profound regard for human interaction. We are pleased to see our visions executed through Winona Lighting, and demonstrate the Company’s commitment to provide the broadest and most diverse traditional and solid-state lighting product portfolio in the industry.”

The contemporary Kindred luminaire is designed to provide a room with individualized canopies of light. Its evocative, iconic shape, especially when mounted in close proximity, promotes a feeling of visual comfort, while its thin profile and gentle curvature create a sense of spacial intimacy. The complete Kindred luminaire series is available in three sizes and multiple mounting options.  It delivers decorative, custom or general lighting solutions and can be used in many types of applications, including office, hospitality, retail, residential and specialty public areas.

The Revel luminaire, inspired by the organic shapes of flowers, is a lighting system that gives designers the freedom to create lighting patterns tailored to their unique application. Its simple, yet elegant and thin, form factor allows designers to augment architectural elements of ceilings and walls while providing high-quality ambient lighting. Now available in several mounting styles, Revel can be applied in a multitude of ways to provide accent or functional lighting that breaks away from rectangular grid layouts.

Revel recently received the Most Innovative Product of the Year award at the 2011 Lightfair® International Trade Show and Conference, and both Revel and Kindred luminaires were accepted in the 2011 IES Progress Report for uniqueness, innovation and significance to the lighting industry.

All Winona Lighting products, including the Revel and Kindred, are available through the Company’s global sales representatives and authorized distributors.

Acuity Brands Lighting Executive to Discuss Changing Landscape of Solid State Lighting at 2012 SSL Summit

March 28, 2012

Kevin Leadford, Vice President of Innovation with Acuity Brands Lighting, is speaking on the applications of new lighting technologies at the 2012 SSL Summit LA in Long Beach, CA on April 3, 2012.  Leadford’s presentation “Realizing the Promise of Solid State Lighting” focuses on how these exciting new technologies are expected to reshape the lighting industry.

“Solid state lighting is currently in its infancy,” said Leadford. “Up until now, much of the industry’s focus has been on light source suitability (efficacy, color, standards, etc.) with much attention on replacement lamps and luminaires. Looking forward, the unique attributes of SSL technology and continued focus on energy conservation will facilitate smarter integration, new form factors and styles, and lighting products with capabilities not yet envisioned.”

Leadford’s presentation will discuss the technology driving these changes, including both LEDs and OLEDs. He will also share predictions on how the solid state lighting industry will move beyond the basics to redefine what lighting is and how we utilize it.

Acuity Brands Executive Presents New Visions for OLED Lighting to IES

January 30, 2012

Jeannine Fisher, PE, LC, Acuity Brands OLED director of lighting design and application, has presented a new vision for OLED lighting to members of the Illuminating Engineering Society San Diego Chapter. Fisher’s educational session was designed to help attendees explore unique ways to apply light in architecture.

“OLEDs are unlike any other light source,” said Fisher. “They give us the prospect of creating luminaires that enhance our visual environment and satisfy our psychological appetite for brightness. They are natural and intuitive. They deconstruct materials and reduce them to the bare essence of light itself. OLEDs are pure, simple and honest. As I like to say, OLEDs celebrate lighting with light.”

Traditionally luminaire designs have attempted to hide or cover the source of light. However, the emitted light from OLED is calm and comfortable to the viewer’s eye, even without the presence of shrouds and diffusers. No longer constrained by bulky housings and clumsy optical devices, the potential of OLED lighting is dramatically expanded – from integration of lighting and architecture to new lighting application design philosophies to visionary luminaire designs that are functional, aesthetically pleasing and emotionally compelling.
