Las Vegas Convention Center Cuts Energy Consumption by 40% with High Bay Luminaires from Acuity Brands

April 1, 2013

DualBayhighbayluminaireApplication2LRThe Las Vegas Convention Center selected approximately 2,000 Holophane® DualBay high bay luminaires from Acuity Brands to improve lighting and reduce costs in its 3.2 million-square-foot facility. Installed in the convention center’s central exhibit halls, DualBay high bay luminaires feature Holophane ISD Superglass™ reflectors, dual lamp technology, solid-state electronic ballasts, and a state-of-the-art thermal management system to deliver better light quality, distribution and energy savings. The luminaires are ideal for a variety of industrial, retail and commercial applications.

“DualBay high bay luminaires have reduced the convention center’s energy consumption by nearly 40 percent while creating a vivid, uniformly lit environment with less glare and strain on the eyes,” said Joe Toro, electrical supervisor for the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.

Using two, 315-watt ceramic metal halide lamps, the high-efficacy DualBay luminaire delivers a 90+ color rendering index (CRI) and up to 112 lumens per watt in the Las Vegas Convention Center. The light levels in the central exhibit halls now range from 60 to 85 footcandles, with greater intensity in areas with lower ceilings.

“Our exhibitors have commented about how well their products look on display,” said Walter Laub, senior manager of facilities engineering for the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. “The new lighting complements the exhibit space, making it more attractive and easier to promote overall.”

The fixtures are mounted up to 40 feet and positioned so light patterns overlap to help eliminate the possibilities of dark areas. An automated computer system controls the lighting and allows luminaires to be turned on or off individually.

Based on the current success, the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority plans to add an estimated 1,400 fixtures in two additional halls. For more information about Holophane DualBay high bay luminaires, please visit www.holophane.com or www.acuitybrands.com.

Virginia’s Largest Pet Supply Store Installs Acuity Brands Integrated LED Lighting and Controls

January 22, 2013

Care-A-Lot Pet Supply reduces energy use and effectively highlights merchandise with integrated LED lighting and digital controls.

LR_0210_3-sharpLeading Virginia pet retailer, Care-A-Lot® Pet Supply, installed more than 200 indoor and outdoor LED luminaires and poles and digital controls from Acuity Brands in its new 20,000-square-foot facility in Virginia Beach, Va. A combination of Lithonia Lighting®, Winona® Lighting, Gotham®, and Sensor Switch® LED lighting and controls solutions work seamlessly together to highlight merchandise and reduce energy usage. It is estimated the store will save $5,000 annually in energy costs compared to typical HID and fluorescent lamp sources.

Working with PM&E Design Group and Resource Lighting, Care-A-Lot selected a variety of Acuity Brands lighting solutions to solve unique challenges. Challenges included lighting a space and merchandise effectively with 30-foot-high-ceilings, as well as achieving optimum lighting and minimal glare for the aquarium displays. On the exterior, Care-A-Lot needed a solution to provide quality lighting in their large parking lot, while minimizing light pollution to the neighboring residential community.

“We wanted to work with one lighting manufacturer for the new Care-A-Lot store,” said Jake Stevens, a project leader with Resource Lighting who helped design the lighting solution. “Acuity Brands was the perfect partner because it delivers a wide range of indoor and outdoor lighting products, very high quality fixtures, as well as beautiful, decorative fixtures.”

I-BEAM® fluorescent highbays from Lithonia Lighting were installed throughout the sales floor to enhance the lighting for two different shelving types. RT5™ volumetric recessed lighting fixtures from Lithonia Lighting integrated with ceiling and wall controls from Sensor Switch were installed in the veterinary exam rooms, kennel rooms, washrooms, offices, break rooms, hallways and restrooms. For aesthetics and energy savings, Care-A-Lot installed Gotham EVO® LED downlights, as well as recessed DoM series LED luminaires from Lithonia Lighting to minimize glare on aquarium tanks.

On the exterior, Lithonia Lighting ALX LED luminaires help keep light within property lines to eliminate light spill and light pollution in the neighboring residential area. Winona Lighting Winscape™ Hensley LED ingrades and Winscape ™ Benton LED wall-mounted cylinders illuminate the columns and entryway to the store.

Acuity Brands Launches New Lithonia Lighting P-Series Modules

October 4, 2012

P Series LED Downlighting Modules use seamless point source dimming and instant-on capabilities to generate a look and feel reminiscent of incandescent lamps.

Lithonia Lighting® P Series LED Downlighting Modules from Acuity Brands, Inc. offer increased energy savings, long life and flexibility compared to many competitive LED downlighting modules. The P Series LED Downlighting Modules have a bar-setting efficacy of 70 lumens per watt, which is more than 86 percent more efficient than incandescent luminaires. They are designed for general-purpose lighting in residential and light commercial applications.

P Series LED Downlighting Modules use advanced Center2Edge™ technology to dim seamlessly from full illumination, creating the look and feel of a single-point source. Center2Edge technology triggers the module’s LED board to act like an incandescent point source while dimming. With a wide area of distribution, P Series LED Downlighting Modules can illuminate a room or hallway and are wet listed for use in bathrooms and areas subject to water exposure.

“The flexibility of the P Series modules is unlike any other LED downlighting module in its category,” said Michael Bruce, Lithonia Lighting Value Stream Manger, Residential Downlighting. “Equipped with our patent-pending driver technology, the fixture turns on instantly just like incandescent, and over 60 P Series modules can connect to a single 600W dimmer – trumping the 8 units capable from a traditional LED downlight. This is a huge advantage in light commercial applications.”

P Series LED Downlighting Modules deliver unprecedented versatility through three different mounting options, which provide the ability to fit 6-inch recessed can-style housings from any manufacturer. The product is easy to install for new construction or retrofit projects with the included E26 adapter for retrofit wiring or a splice kit to meet Title-24 compliance.
