New Wallpack LED Luminaires From Holophane Cut Energy Costs Up to 77 Percent

January 9, 2013

LR-Wallpack-LED-HolophaneFixtures replace metal halide or HPS systems, offers 20+ year service life

Acuity Brands introduces Wallpack® LED luminaires from Holophane that deliver up to 6,500 lumens while reducing energy consumption by as much as 77 percent compared to traditional lighting units. Ideal for replacing 35 watt to 400-watt metal halide fixtures, Wallpack LED luminaires are designed with the same classic appearance that made the Wallpack line popular. Wallpack LED fixtures are offered in two styles with die-cast aluminum housing: W4G with prismatic glass lens and W4P with a polycarbonate lens for lower mounting heights requiring vandal resistance.

Available with 10, 20 or 30 LEDs, Wallpack LED luminaires employ individual optics over each LED to deliver a higher percentage of light to the ground where it is needed. A high-efficiency electronic driver delivers constant current to the LEDs and offers internal surge protection.

Wallpack LED fixtures are designed for more than 20 years of service life with virtually no maintenance. They can eliminate as many as 10 metal halide lamp replacements. Tests confirm the luminaires deliver more than 70 percent of their initial lumen output even after 100,000 hours of operation.

“Long, reliable operation ensures building exteriors or underpasses remain safely illuminated to boost safety and security,” said David Deck, Holophane Product Manager, Infrastructure. “Wallpack LED fixtures create comfortable, uniformly illuminated environments free of dark spots generally resulting from failed HID lamps.”

Designed in a traditional day-form, the new luminaires ensure an aesthetically appealing look that provides a seamless gradual upgrade to an LED system without interfering with an area’s visual appearance. The fixtures share the same footprint as traditional Wallpack units and can hide unsightly wall stains left by the original lighting units.

Wallpack LED luminaires are easy to install and require only three bolts to secure the fixtures to the mounting surface. Fixtures may be wired in recessed junction boxes through the back casting or through the top ¾-inch NPT when using surface conduit.

Lighting system owners can further improve energy savings by pairing W4G Wallpack LED luminaires with lighting control solutions, including Acuity Brands’ compatible ROAM® monitoring system. Wallpack LED fixtures are appropriate for a range of environments including perimeter lighting and security lighting for industrial and commercial buildings, schools, parking garages, underpasses, and tunnels.

Acuity Brands Acquires Adura Technologies, Inc., a Leading Developer of Wireless Controls and Energy Management Solutions

January 8, 2013

adu_tech_icon_black copy 2Acuity Brands,  a market leader in innovative energy-efficient lighting and control solutions, today announced it has acquired the assets of Adura Technologies, Inc. (“Adura”), a leading developer of wireless controls and energy management solutions.  Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Founded in 2005, San Francisco-based Adura has led the development of radio frequency (RF) mesh networking technology that allows individual light fixtures to communicate in a wireless mesh network with switches, sensors and system management software. The ZigBee® wireless standard-based technology enables energy-saving control solutions while eliminating the cost of using wires to network all of the devices in the system. Wireless controls technology improves the economics and feasibility of installing lighting controls in a wide variety of new construction and renovation projects.

“The addition of these Adura Technologies solutions continues the expansion of the breadth and depth of our wireless lighting controls portfolio, which includes nWifi™ technology, the ROAM® streetlight monitoring system and the FIDO™ emergency monitoring system, and it further enhances our strategy of integrated and intelligent lighting and controls solutions,” said Vernon J. Nagel, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Acuity Brands. “Adura’s simple to use wireless technology coupled with our broad luminaire portfolio, Sensor Switch® occupancy sensors and Lighting Control & Design™ (LC&D) system management software will allow for the creation of intelligent lighting systems that are simple to use while generating greater energy savings for our customers. We see wireless technology extending to almost all applications, including parking garages, industrial locations, retail settings, educational institutions, healthcare facilities and commercial office space.”

Adura systems are currently installed in 7 million square feet of commercial space, including 4 million square feet of covered parking facilities, contributing to a documented lighting energy reduction in lighting system renovations as high as 80%. According to U.S. Department of Energy figures, there are estimated to be 36 million covered parking lighting fixtures in the United States. New state and local energy codes being adopted based on updated standards will require covered parking lighting to use occupancy-based, multi-level lighting controls. Conversion of the installed base for covered parking using a solution combining lighting fixtures and wireless controls equates to a potential market opportunity valued between $15 and $20 billion.

The acquisition is not expected to materially impact Acuity Brands’ fiscal 2013 consolidated financial performance.

Sunoptics Launches Prismatic Daylighting Solution for Suspended-Ceiling Applications; Offers Wide Variety of Choices in Lens and Size Options

December 4, 2012

New LightFlex system delivers superior daylighting with the ability to integrate seamlessly with LED lighting and digital lighting controls.

LR-Tubular-LightFlex-Cutaway-smAcuity Brands introduces the LightFlex™ system, a high performance prismatic daylighting solution for suspended-ceiling applications from Sunoptics. The LightFlex system makes optimal use of daylight throughout the day, delivering glare-free lighting while minimizing energy usage from electric lighting.

The LightFlex toplighting system uses the Sunoptics® Signature Series prismatic skylight. This skylight allows the system to efficiently capture low-angle sunlight and optimize light distribution. A unique, patent-pending optic sphere drives light down through the skylight’s light well, maximizing the system’s light penetration. The result is the system makes extremely effective use of available sunlight to provide beneficial daylighting for more hours, during more days and in more geographic locations than typical skylights. The system comes standard with a conventional insulated square roof curb, which uses roofing industry-preferred flashing methods.

The LightFlex daylighting system is available in 21” tubular as well as 2’ x 4’ and 4’ x 4’ configurations to fit a variety of fixture options for plenum ceiling applications. The larger unit options allow for fewer penetrations in the roof. The tubular device includes adjustable elbows to bypass interior ceiling obstructions in retrofit applications.

All LightFlex products’ light wells use MIRO-SILVER® reflective aluminum, which features 98 percent light reflectivity performance from industry leader Alanod®. LightFlex is also offered with numerous lens options that match many of the lenses used in Acuity Brands LED and fluorescent luminaires. This breadth of choices allows an architect to match up the design of the electric source with the design of the natural light source, a feature that separates the product line from competitive daylighting offerings.

The LightFlex daylighting system is designed to integrate seamlessly with the broad array of Acuity Brands® controls solutions, such as nLight® controls and Dark to Light® control systems, as well as to match up with Acuity Brands indoor ambient luminaires. In addition, the system’s light control louvers allow users to adjust the amount of daylight entering the room, including completely darkening the daylight for visual presentations.

“The release of LightFlex daylighting products for suspended ceiling applications further expands the total toplighting offering from Sunoptics,” said Eric Huffman, Director, Daylighting Sales, Sunoptics. “Our solution integrates technology, controls and daylight harvesting for intelligent, holistic and sustainable lighting solutions, which contrasts with the single product feature approach used by many competitors.”
