Las Vegas Convention Center Cuts Energy Consumption by 40% with High Bay Luminaires from Acuity Brands

April 1, 2013

DualBayhighbayluminaireApplication2LRThe Las Vegas Convention Center selected approximately 2,000 Holophane® DualBay high bay luminaires from Acuity Brands to improve lighting and reduce costs in its 3.2 million-square-foot facility. Installed in the convention center’s central exhibit halls, DualBay high bay luminaires feature Holophane ISD Superglass™ reflectors, dual lamp technology, solid-state electronic ballasts, and a state-of-the-art thermal management system to deliver better light quality, distribution and energy savings. The luminaires are ideal for a variety of industrial, retail and commercial applications.

“DualBay high bay luminaires have reduced the convention center’s energy consumption by nearly 40 percent while creating a vivid, uniformly lit environment with less glare and strain on the eyes,” said Joe Toro, electrical supervisor for the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.

Using two, 315-watt ceramic metal halide lamps, the high-efficacy DualBay luminaire delivers a 90+ color rendering index (CRI) and up to 112 lumens per watt in the Las Vegas Convention Center. The light levels in the central exhibit halls now range from 60 to 85 footcandles, with greater intensity in areas with lower ceilings.

“Our exhibitors have commented about how well their products look on display,” said Walter Laub, senior manager of facilities engineering for the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. “The new lighting complements the exhibit space, making it more attractive and easier to promote overall.”

The fixtures are mounted up to 40 feet and positioned so light patterns overlap to help eliminate the possibilities of dark areas. An automated computer system controls the lighting and allows luminaires to be turned on or off individually.

Based on the current success, the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority plans to add an estimated 1,400 fixtures in two additional halls. For more information about Holophane DualBay high bay luminaires, please visit www.holophane.com or www.acuitybrands.com.

Acuity Brands Enhances Lithonia Lighting D-Series Area LED Luminaires with Motion Sensors

March 28, 2013

LR-LithoniaLighting-D-Series-Area-Size-1-and-Size-2Acuity Brands introduces Lithonia Lighting® D-Series Area LED luminaires integrated with Sensor Switch® motion sensors. The D-Series Area Size 1 and Size 2 LED luminaires utilize motion sensors to increase energy savings in outdoor applications, saving approximately 80 percent in energy than comparable fixed output metal halide fixtures.

Ideal for 15-to 30-foot mounting heights, the luminaire-mounted motion sensor provides a 15-to 20-foot coverage radius and a 300-degree coverage pattern. Innovative presets gradually dim the LED luminaire to a pre-set “low” level when the area becomes unoccupied, achieving energy savings while still providing security lighting. When motion is detected, the luminaires quickly ramp to the full output. The motion sensors feature nine fully programmable attributes including maximum output, motion time delay, dimmed level, fade down and ramp up times.

“With motion sensing, we are able to further enhance the benefits of LED technology to deliver even more energy savings and increase the lifespan of the luminaire,” said Eric Gibson, Value Stream Manager, Lithonia Lighting, Outdoor. “By integrating the motion sensor and the luminaire, we eliminate the need to specify and install the lighting and controls separately. The sensor comes pre-configured to standards established by the customer.”

D-Series Area LED luminaires provide a modern look ideal for many commercial and municipal applications, including parking lots, plazas, campuses and streetscapes. March 21, 2013

Acuity Brands receives a prestigious “Best in Class” and six “Recognized” awards for excellence from the 2013 Next Generation Luminaires Solid State Lighting Design Competition.

ngl_logo_finalAcuity Brands has been honored with seven  lighting industry awards including a “Best in Class” from the Next Generation Luminaires™ (NGL) Solid State Lighting (SSL) Design Competition. Distinctions were awarded to Peerless® and Lithonia Lighting® luminaires during the 2013 LEDucation 7 Conference held on March 20th. The judges, comprised of industry peers, evaluated and selected the lighting industry’s most innovative indoor lighting products.

The Lithonia Lighting W Series LED Wall Bracket was chosen “Best in Class” for excellence in quality, energy efficiency, dimmability, and aesthetic appearance and style among other attributes. W Series LED luminaires feature integrated controls that maximize energy savings in low-traffic or low-occupancy areas such as corridors, stairwells and restrooms. The luminaires automatically turn on or off as occupants move in and out of the areas.

According to the NGL, the idea behind its organization is to make it easier for lighting designers and specifiers to find LED lighting products that are worthy of specification. The goal is to recognize products that are not only attractive, but that are also energy-efficient and deliver good lighting quality.

NGL judges also distinguished Acuity Brands with six “Recognized” awards granted for the following innovative LED luminaires:  Round LED luminaire by Peerless®; Peerless® Mino LED luminaire;  Origami™ LED luminaire by Peerless®;  I-BEAM® LED high bay luminaire by Lithonia Lighting®;  IBH LED industrial low bay luminaire by Lithonia Lighting®; and  Proteon™ SL linear pendant luminaire by Lithonia Lighting®.

Acuity Brands Receives Prestigious Award for Peerless Marketing Campaign

March 20, 2013

AB-Peerless-Mino-Ad-WinnerAcuity Brands announced today that Architectural SSL magazine selected Peerless® as its Market Leader for Outstanding Media Campaign winner in the 2013 Product Innovation Awards (PIA). The award recognizes the integrated marketing campaign touting the Peerless Mino luminaires.

The comprehensive multimedia campaign utilizes advertisements, collateral, web marketing, email, social media and public relations to effectively promote the new line of Peerless LED luminaires.

One of the most recognizable pieces of the campaign includes upside-down print advertisements.

“The upside-down format is designed to garner attention, intrigue readers and create an interactive element whereby one flips the page around to continue reading the ad,” said Peerless Marketing Communications Supervisor and campaign creator Randall Beren. “Moreover, this unique approach visually ties with the message that Peerless is now ‘turning things around’ by expanding our focus beyond indirect luminaires to include direct ambient luminaires.”

“In other words,” Beren continued, “we’re asking architects, designers and other specifiers to ‘Shift Perceptions’ and think about Peerless and our luminaires in a whole new light.”.

Another key component of the campaign is the informative product video that to date has garnered more than 1,200 views on Vimeo, YouTube and the Peerless website.

The Peerless Mino suite – which currently includes recessed, pendant and surface-mount 2’ x 2’ luminaires and that will soon be extended to include 1’ x 1’ and 1’ x 4’ models – delivers energy efficiency, quality optics, controls compatibility and application flexibility in a stylish, contemporary form. When illuminated, subtle gradient shadowing appears along the perimeter of the Peerless Mino lens surface. As the luminaire is viewed from different angles, these sophisticated abstractions shift in appearance adding drama and distinction.

Architectural SSL PIA recognitions determine and honor the most innovative LED and solid-state luminaires and fixtures on the market, while also recognizing the players behind the components that make up these light sources. For more information about  PIA, please visit www.architecturalssl.com/pia/.
